The new iPhone 15 is clearly compatible with Qi2 wireless chargers, and four major manufacturers have launched seven Qi2 MPP wireless charging modules.
As is well known, Apple has upgraded both wired and wireless charging since the iPhone 12 series. The wired charging power has increased from 18W to 20W, and this 2W change may not seem significant, but its impact on the fast charging market is profound. On one hand, approximately six months after the release of the new iPhone models, dozens of manufacturers have launched nearly a hundred 20W fast charging products. On the other hand, many mid-to-high power multi-port fast charging products have also taken 20W into consideration in their multi-port simultaneous output strategy.
In terms of wireless charging, the new iPhone models retain compatibility with Qi 7.5W wireless charging while introducing a new MagSafe magnetic wireless charging technology, which provides a better user experience in terms of charging speed and usage methods. This has had a profound impact on the third-party wireless charging market, and even if a product does not use an Apple-certified wireless charging module, it often adds magnetic charging functionality. Currently, corresponding products such as multi-in 1 /stand type magnetic wireless charging and magnetic wireless charging banks are quite abundant.
What is the Qi2 wireless charging standard?
The Qi2 standard was recently released by the Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) based on Apple’s innovative Magnetic Power Profile. This standard aims to provide a better wireless charging user experience and pave the way for future novel features and enhancements. It has been rumored that Apple’s upcoming iPhone 15 will support 15W wireless fast charging using this new standard.
The wireless charging market is enormous, and the introduction of the iPhone 15’s new wireless charging capabilities will undoubtedly reshape the market yet again, following in the footsteps of the iPhone 12’s impact.
The Qi2 standard is an optimized Multipattern Protocol (MPP) agreement based on Apple’s MagSafe technology. It improves user convenience by allowing for easier alignment and use during wireless charging. This standardization and standardization effort by WPC includes authentication integration to further optimize usability and facilitate the widespread adoption of wireless charging.
To achieve Qi2 certification, products must include both EPP and MPP transmitter areas, and authentication must be included. Single-output wireless chargers cannot be certified Qi2, but they can contain BPP output types, but at least one EPP or MPP must be present in a multi-output charger.
The iPhone 15 series is explicitly compatible with Qi2 wireless chargers
On the morning of September 13, 2023, Apple’s autumn new product launch conference, known as “technology spring evening”, was held as scheduled, bringing the highly anticipated iPhone 15 series, new Apple Watch series, and two USB-C interface headphones.
The all-new iPhone 15 series not only adopts a USB-C interface but also emphasizes the support for the new Qi2 wireless charging standard during the launch event. The Qi2 standard charger can provide a maximum of 15W wireless charging for the iPhone 15 models like Apple’s MagSafe charger, and the Qi2 charger does not require using Apple’s expensive MagSafe module or obtaining Apple’s MFi certification.
The wireless charging market is bound to receive high attention from the industry chain upstream and downstream due to Apple’s move, and some manufacturers have already discovered this opportunity early on and started to make arrangements. According to an incomplete statistic from ChargerLAB, EasyCharge, Yixin has launched a complete Qi2 MPP magnetic charging module based on existing solutions and modules for customers to quickly achieve product mass production and seize market opportunities.
